A fear of being ordinary can cause you to feel anxious. But its also a good thing because it keeps you on your toes and wanting more out of life.
If an individual is always content with the status quo, they may not experience these anxieties that are often associated with living in routine environments which could ultimately lead them to struggle when faced with change or uncertainty.
Koinophobia is a fear of being ordinary. People with this phobia are afraid that they will be like everyone else and not special in any way.
Are you afraid of being ordinary? Do you want for fame and money but fear that you may instead lead a mundane, mediocre life?
I always wanted to be different and remarkable as a kid. I didn’t want to be average, therefore I refused to accept mediocrity. I worked hard in order to achieve high test scores, honors, and perfect grades.
It was not an option to be mediocre. Throughout my youth, I fantasized of being famous, but today I chuckle at the thought.
I no longer dread being ordinary as a result of time and personal development. I, on the other hand, welcome it. This is why.
What Makes Us Fearful of Being Ordinary?
We must rate ourselves among our peers to see whether we are better than average. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others in the age of social media and the internet.
Should we, in fact, do so? Should we judge a life’s worth by the amount of social media followers we have or the number of likes we receive?
Clickbait headlines, Instagram-worthy photos, and Facebook snapshots all grab our attention, but a fulfilling existence doesn’t need a global highlight reel.
The internet is full with misrepresentations of people’s lives, and social media gives a flawed yardstick for success.
Riches and celebrity are weak predictors of success. You may be a cruel and sad S.O.B. even if you have a lot of money.
Furthermore, our assets and achievements reveal nothing about our ideals. The cost of our vehicles, houses, and holidays has little to do with how we treat others. The wealthy and famous may have made their riches via nefarious and unethical means.
What Does It Mean to Live an Extraordinary Life?
The definition of an amazing life, like beauty, may be in the eye of the beholder.
My next-door neighbor aspired to be a model in high school. She put on high heels, rehearsed her catwalk, and flipped through fashion magazines.
She auditioned for modeling jobs but was never hired. She was a lovely young lady, but she was too short to work in the fashion industry.
What does it take to be really exceptional? I could have made it as a model at 6’1′′, but I didn’t want to live in the spotlight. I didn’t want to travel the globe, walk the catwalks, and starve myself. I tried out for a few local modeling jobs before moving on to other things.
That sort of celebrity appealed to my neighbor, but not to me. What criteria do you use to determine greatness? I didn’t find staring into the lens of a camera to be very exciting.
Ordinary Becomes Extraordinary
Fear of being average might drive us to seek for the next great thing. It’s not simple to get off the hedonic treadmill once you’re on it.
Consider getting an A+ on your most recent paper. Does it imply you’re free to take it easy this week? Obviously not. If you don’t want to be average, you’ll want to do well on your next project and the one after that.
Contentment isn’t something that comes with fame and money. The dread of becoming average, on the other hand, might drive individuals to keep running.
You’ll keep looking for the next spectacular moment—the next opportunity to show your worth—if you’re afraid. You’ll continue to strive for the highest levels of achievement.
You’ll be stressed and worried about keeping up with your opponents along the road. Imagine producing a best-selling work and instantly believing you’ll never produce another notable book.
Imagine having the constant fear that you’ll never be as excellent as you were yesterday, or that you’ll never be good enough.
The Fear of Ordinary Life and the Desire to Leave a Legacy
Some individuals who are afraid of being ordinary are also afraid of death, and they worry that no one will remember them once they pass away.
Keep in mind that you will never meet future generations. Instead, create for the sheer joy of it. You write because you’re eager to express yourself, and you sing because you like the sound of your own voice.
You should share your abilities with the world because you can’t keep them to yourself, not because you need accolades.
“Does a tree fall in a forest and no one is present to hear it create a sound?” you may have heard. Would you still attempt to fulfill your goals if no one knew about them?
Would you still record the moment if social media didn’t exist, or would you live in it? Concentrate on internal motives rather than external ones.
Please remember to concentrate on the delight that something offers you when you do it.
Ordinary People Can Be Happy
Is it necessary to be highly gifted in order to be happy? No. Is it necessary for us to be very successful? No. Are you very wealthy? Nope. That’s also not the case.
Is it true that fame would make me happy? No, I don’t believe so. I wouldn’t blog anonymously if it did.
Don’t be afraid to be ordinary. Fear of Being Stuck
We should not be afraid to be ordinary. Instead, we should be afraid of stagnation.
Recognizing the beauty of everyday life does not preclude you from achieving lofty objectives. If you have the time and space in your life, you may set little monthly objectives or big ones.
Do you have a significant aim you’d want to achieve? That’s fantastic, but consider why you want to do it.
Is it necessary to be the best? Are you following the advice of others? Accomplish you want to do something to improve yourself and the world around you, or do you need to be recognized?
Aiming for growth is the key to having an outstanding life. I don’t have to write the finest blog entries in the world. Instead, each time I create a new one, I need to improve. I need to read the words I typed into my computer and appreciate how they sound.
I use new measurements to define success and compare today’s version of myself to yesterday’s. In truth, I am my fiercest rival. Rather than striving to impress others, I achieve success for myself.
My objective is to improve a little bit every day rather than to be the greatest.
What Makes Us Afraid of Being Ordinary?
What’s the harm in being ordinary? What if we learned to be content with a life that isn’t exceptional by society’s standards?
I stop worrying about the cacophony of expectations and blunders when I choose to be appreciative. I admire individuals who strive for greatness on a broad scale, but I’m no longer among them.
You may be afraid of being ignored if you are afraid of becoming average. However, I’m sure a lot of people see you. My parents and children see me as remarkable. My partner does that, too, on occasion.
I have the potential to be an amazing mother, daughter, and friend. I can reach out to others when they need me and be there for them when they are in distress.
Many of us consider ordinary to be uninteresting, but what if we shifted our perspective? What if we saw the mundane as a source of calm, serenity, and contentment? Consider how much happy you’d be if we weren’t always striving for achievement.
To live a simple, amazing life, we don’t have to become the most prosperous person on the planet.
Joy, not fear, should be your driving force.
I don’t mind being ordinary any more. I’ve come to appreciate its beauty and the moments that make up my days.
If I’m not cautious, I’ll miss this opportunity. Every moment is unique because it only occurs once, and I will never have another chance to experience it after today.
I can spend time with my children, go for walks, and enjoy being surrounded by nature in my everyday life. I don’t have to race from one location to another, and instead of rushing to the next life objective, I can take things leisurely.
When I am satisfied with my choices, decisions, and the people in my life, I am living an incredible life. When I improve my connections and talents, I am living my best life.
Embracing a Simple Life
My everyday existence may seem mundane, but it’s exactly where I want to be right now. Not in some bizarre, front-page-worthy location, but in this one, where I am pleased to be myself with the people I care about.
Those Instagram photos make me feel that my life should be more meaningful or important in some way, but then I remember that pleasure and contentment are there in front of me.
When I look over the internet, I understand that my dreams are probably quieter than others’. Getting to the next great thing can prevent me from the things I really want—a peaceful, happy home.
It was difficult to leave a well-paid position. It’s also difficult for me to give up my belongings and live with less.
But what’s wrong with taking a different, maybe mundane, path? What if life’s modest joys are all I require? I don’t want to waste my time rushing from one location to another, nor do I want to squander my time on a job that doesn’t fulfill me. Is it true that I’m living a little life or that I’m living a perfectly nice one? One that warms my heart as much as previous spectacular achievements?
While we remember the remarkable events in our lives, we also remember many of the mundane ones. I recall rolling money with my father, putting pennies in my savings jar, and spending hours with my elder brother.
To live a meaningful life, I don’t need to be famous. Thank god for people with amazing abilities, but we don’t need to alter the world on such a huge scale to live a meaningful life.
I believe that happiness may be found even on the most mundane of days.
