What is cottagecore, exactly?
Cottagecore is “an aesthetic and lifestyle trend that supports a simpler period and has an English rural vibe,” according to Jennifer Burt, the “multi-passionate creative” behind the vintage lifestyle company Mississippi Maximalism.
Cottagecore “shows up in how they wear (comfy peasant dresses), how they decorate (natural wood tones and flowers), and what they do (baking),” according to Burt. Cottagecore first became popular before the pandemic, but according to Burt, it became widespread “during the epidemic’s 2020 lockdowns and restrictions.” Cottagecore has, in essence, provided comfort to many throughout this period.
It’s also a great aesthetic technique to include into your house during the autumn and winter seasons since it “plays to our desire for comfort and nostalgia,” according to Burt. Cottagecore lovers like things like the foliage changing colors and the weather becoming sharp because they are closer to nature,” she says. “You may also use natural components like pumpkins and apples to decorate and enjoy.”
The warm and comforting feeling of cottagecore is particularly suitable for the bedroom. “Cottagecore is about comfort at its core,” adds Burt. “There’s no greater place to feel at ease than in your own bed.”
Here are Burt’s top suggestions for bringing cottagecore flair into your bedroom.

1. Make quilts and blankets a part of your life.
Quilts and blankets are the most popular method to design a bedroom in the cottagecore style. “You’ll want to layer bedspreads and have one at the foot of the bed depending on the temperature,” Burt adds. “You’ll also need access to some fuzzy throws.”
Burt’s family has handed down quilts created by her grandmother, which were inspired by her mother’s childhood clothing and fit into the cottagecore style. “Whenever I use one of them, it’s like a little journey down memory lane,” she adds.

2. Construct a nook
Slowing down and soaking in activities from a simpler period, such as putting away devices in favor of a good book, are central to the cottagecore lifestyle. This is a pastime that is ideal for doing in your bedroom. That’s why Burt suggests creating a reading corner in your bedroom. “For this, I prefer the concept of a comfortable chair in the corner next to a window,” she adds.

3. Use fragrances that are pleasing to the senses.
Cottagecore is heavily influenced by nature. Scent is one method to bring the outside into your sleeping environment, especially those that make you feel peaceful and connected to nature.
“Another way to give a bit of cottagecore is via smell,” Burt adds. “To induce relaxation in the bedroom, use bundles of dried lavender and eucalyptus.”

4. Use natural materials wherever possible.
“Keep the materials natural and warm for furnishings,” Burt advises. “Furniture in a cottagecore bedroom should also be practical, so look for trunks and closets that can double as concealed storage for all your warm blankets and sweaters.” A trip to the flea market seems to be in order!

5. Put on the appropriate attire.
Consider how your favorite literary heroines could have dressed in their bedrooms while they were unwinding. This is a wonderful way to incorporate cottagecore into your home life. Vintage nightgowns and nubby robes, according to Burt, are perfect for the bedroom.
“Add hooks to the back of the door and alongside the closet to display these items as part of your décor,” she says.

6. Put antique items on display
Antique shop finds, heirlooms, and cherished things may all find a home in your cottagecore bedroom. Burt likes to complete the cottagecore aesthetic with wicker baskets, tiny wood boxes, and antique books.
“You may mix in containers of flowers with tiny, discovered, emotional things like seashells to create scenes,” she adds.

7. Pay attention to the scenery outside.
“Because cottagecore is so focused on nature,” explains Burt, “you don’t want to hide the window unless it’s with an airy fabric.” “Dramatic curtains may also be used to draw attention to the view.” This is my favorite cottagecore suggestion because it truly helps to bring the outside in.”
In the end, Cottagecore is more of a way of life than an aesthetic. It’s all about interpreting your want for a simpler era and finding a method to connect with nature that feels right to you.
“I like that you can include it as much as you want into your lifestyle and décor,” Burt adds. “Be inspired by the cottagecore style rather than completely overhauling your clothing and décor.”
