The “countdown paper chain” is a fun DIY Christmas decoration that can be made with paper. The design is simple, but it’s eye catching and festive.
Because we have little children, Christmas is always a fantastic time at our family. Our kids like Christmas, from putting up all of the decorations, baking cookies, visiting homes that are wonderfully decked in lights, attending all of the holiday festivities, and excitedly anticipating the arrival of that jolly old elf on Christmas Eve after sleep.
We have numerous Christmas traditions, but counting down the days till Christmas is one of their favorites. Nothing makes them happier than a nice countdown to something wonderful. Because of its simplicity, this project not only looks fantastic in your holiday décor, but it also provides your kids something to look forward to.
Are you ready to begin the countdown? Let’s get started.

Steps to Making a Christmas Countdown Plate
This one’s simplicity will appeal to you. It has a beautiful, clean aesthetic and can be used for any occasion where anticipation and excitement are desired.
1. Begin by painting the plate’s center.
When I painted the middle of my plate, I just poured the paint right onto the plate and smoothed it out with my sponge brush.
I’ll use a bit less paint the next time I make this activity since it covered the plate better than I expected. I brushed outwards from where I wanted the paint to terminate after putting the paint on the plate.
Then, with the sponge brush tilted at an angle, I painted an outline around the inner circle of the plate. After painting the inner circle, I used the remaining paint on my plate to fill in the middle.
You want the plate to be well-coated, but any excess paint should be removed so the central region is smooth. To achieve this, I took a plastic foam plate and wiped the extra paint off the Christmas countdown plate with it. To pick up the excess paint, I dabbed the sponge brush onto the plate. I let the middle of the plate dry for 24 hours after painting it. I needed it to be entirely dry. You will be rewarded for your perseverance.
2. Make a plan for where you’ll say what you’re going to say.
It was time to plot out where I wanted to place the words “Days Until Christmas” after the blackboard paint was dried. I left enough space at the top for my kids to write the exact number of days till Christmas using ordinary chalk. This will be simple for them to do.
I opted to begin speaking in the center of my plate. I used a pencil to softly scribble where I wanted the words, similar to how an artist might sketch a scene before painting it. No one would notice the pencil marks I used as a guide when I painted the text onto the plate.
You may print the text, do half print and half cursive, or use whichever script style best matches your taste!
3. Finish it out with some fun lettering!
It’s time to utilize the white chalk marker now that everything has been prepared and drawn down using a pencil. Use the chalk marker to carefully go over the writing you created in pencil. I used the marker to write out the words, then went back over them to add my ornamental dots to each letter. I just drew little circles at the points of each letter and filled them in with dots.
4. Add burlap accents and greenery
I opted to save money on greenery since I am a frugal person and, well, a major fan of Christmas decorations. I cut some bits off one of my old Christmas wreaths instead of going to a craft shop to buy fake greenery.
Consider how you can reuse Christmas or other holiday decorations for projects like this one if you have some. I think I clipped around 6 strands that were each approximately 2″ long and utilized them. It’s important to remember that it doesn’t have to be precise, and you may use as little or as much as you like.
I used my hot glue gun to adhere my pieces to my plate after I got them. I began with the fanned-out end pieces and worked my way in from there. I used an additional roll of burlap from when we built the autumn wreath to construct a bow after I got the foliage affixed. I used a huge dot of hot glue on the reverse of the ribbon after I made the bow and then placed it on the foliage where I felt it would look best.
5. Finish off your holiday decor with a Countdown Christmas Plate.
I didn’t want to display this painting anyplace since the kids would modify it every day. Ours will most likely be put on a bookshelf shelf and propped up against something as Christmas approaches in our home. This will make it simple for the youngsters to get to it.
Another alternative is to utilize a plate holder. I hope you and your family have as much fun counting down to Christmas with this dish as our kids have!
